I hate gardening. Growing up, my mom would suddenly feel the need to have a garden. My dad would rent a Roto-Tiller, till up a 15'x30' section of the yard, and then my little sister and I got the awesome task of spending the next seven months doing nothing but pulling weeds and frickin' dandelions out of the gaping empty paths between the plants and the rows. I didn't know anything about growing food, but I knew that it was far more work than I wanted to put into growing a handful of tomatoes and the odd cucumber, which is all that we ever got out of it after the indigenous fauna gave our garden a once-over. I know many people had the same experience, and feel the same way. I was feeling a bit conflicted, now having an interest in the skill of learning to grow my own food, so I started with a simple Google search:
There were some interesting techniques, but one particular approach caught my eye.
I was intrigued at what appeared to be people gardening like they do in Minecraft. Upon further research, I saw people using the same gardening style, but in waist-high garden beds. If there was a way for me to have a garden with no weeds and no bending over, I was DEFINITELY interested. That was how I stumbled upon the Square Foot Gardening method.
There are many interesting points to the SFG method, and I may do a separate post for each one, since there are a lot of fun Minecraft parallels as well.
