We all hear stories from our childhood, and even into adulthood, we don't question them. We just take stories at face value without having any kind of reference to base them on. Well, today I got some good reference. On Monday, I planted some beans outside, and a couple in cells indoors. I had hoped that it would give me some kind of reference as to what was going on outdoors. The peas took about 10 days to sprout. The beans indoors sprouted... a little faster than that...
So, in the space of about TEN HOURS, the bean plant not only sprouted, but it grew to a height of almost three inches and looks like a frickin TRIFFID! As with all fairy tales, there is always an origin for the premise. The insane growth speed of a bean is obviously the seminal idea behind 'Jack and the Beanstalk.' I can see that now with my own eyes. This gives me a new appreciation for those old stories of folklore... and is kinda making me wonder about those Bremen town musicians all over again. Hmm...
